The CeCure adapter uses a compression-fit ring that seats against the resurfaced flue wall, not the tile edge, so the cap diameter must match the finished ID of your CeCure application within 1/4 inch.

To identify what you have, look for the HeatShield stamp on the existing collar or the CeCure label inside the flue throat. If the liner was resurfaced, the cap should show a model prefix of “CC-” followed by the flue diameter. For standard stainless caps, the part number is etched on the underside of the lid. The aftermarket equivalents meet the same 304 stainless spec and carry identical warranty terms, but we always verify collar depth and spark-arrestor mesh count before quoting, since HeatShield’s CeCure system requires a minimum 5/8-inch collar engagement that some generic caps don’t provide.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Water dripping into the firebox during spring snowmelt. The cap lid has separated from its collar or the sealant bed has cracked. Boulder’s 300+ days of annual UV exposure hardens silicone and butyl sealants faster than at sea level, so a cap that held at installation can fail in 8-10 years here versus 15+ back east.
• Rust streaks running down the exterior flue tile. The 304 stainless has developed pitting at the weld points, usually where salt-laden meltwater pools at the collar base. Once pitting reaches 1/16 inch, the cap is structurally compromised and won’t survive another freeze cycle.
• The cap is visibly tilted or has shifted off-center. The mounting screws have backed out of deteriorating crown concrete, or the crown itself has spalled beneath the cap base. This is common on Boulder homes built 1960-1990 where the crown was poured without expansion joints.
• Debris, bird nests, or squirrel damage in the flue. The spark-arrestor mesh has corroded through or the cap was never spec’d with wildlife-grade screening. HeatShield’s standard mesh is 5/8-inch; in Chautauqua and the foothills, we upgrade to 3/8-inch mesh because pine martens and Abert’s squirrels will push through anything larger.
• Draft problems or smoke spillage on startup. The cap lid has collapsed or the internal baffle has detached, creating a partial blockage. This often follows a heavy snow load or wind gust event, which are both more severe above 5,300 feet than the cap’s original design load assumed.
