How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• HeatShield Cerfractory Foam liner systems with cracked crown bases. The foam sleeve terminates at a refractory wash that forms the crown base. In Boulder’s dry freeze-thaw cycles, that wash cracks vertically where it meets the flue tile, letting water run straight onto the foam collar. We remove the damaged wash, reseal with HeatShield-compatible refractory cement, and install a proper cap with minimum 3-inch overhang to break the drip line.
• HeatShield UL 1777-listed relined flues with corroded galvanized caps. The original cap on many HeatShield relines is a standard galvanized unit that came with the chase cover package. At Boulder’s 5,430-foot elevation, UV exposure is 25 percent higher than sea level, and that galvanized coating degrades in 4-7 years instead of 10+. We replace with stainless steel or copper caps from our Haven buying network, sized to the HeatShield flue diameter without restricting draft.
• HeatShield Joint Repair systems with crown wash erosion above the smoke chamber. When the crown wash thins to less than 3/8 inch, water migrates through pinholes and finds the joint repair seams. The Cerfractory material itself is fine; the crown failed around it. We apply a CrownCoat flexible membrane or pour a new concrete crown with proper slope and drip edge, depending on what the camera shows above the repair zone.
• Multi-flue HeatShield installations with inadequate cap clearance. Some Boulder homes in Table Mesa and Newlands got multi-flue caps with only 4-inch side clearance to the HeatShield termination.
