Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. On Famco throat dampers, the linkage pin corrodes where it passes through the frame bracket, especially in Boulder’s dry winters with indoor humidity below 25%. The handle spins free while the plate stays put, usually rusted half-open.
• You feel cold air dropping when the damper is closed. The plate warps from thermal cycling, or the gasket compresses permanently after 15-20 years. In Boulder, the 5,400-foot altitude means lower boiling points and faster thermal shock to cast iron when you bank a fire overnight.
• The plate drops open on its own after you close it. The Famco spring-tension mechanism weakens. On TMD top-mount units, the stainless cable frays where it bends through the pulley, and the counterweight can’t hold position against a stiff wind across the crown.

A Famco throat damper plate weighs 8-14 pounds of cast iron, and it’s suspended above the firebox on a corroded pin that shears without warning. When that pin lets go, the plate drops onto the firebrick or your hand. The spring on TMD cable systems is under tension; if the cable snaps during removal, the spring housing can recoil. We don’t recommend DIY for either repair.
