The throat dampers are cast iron or steel plates riding in a metal frame, usually found just above the firebox. Top-mount dampers sit on the flue crown and operate by cable. To identify yours, look for a stamped model number on the plate edge or frame lip, or measure the throat opening width and depth to the nearest quarter inch. Copperfield used both left-hand and right-hand pivot hardware depending on the year, and mixing the two will bind the plate.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has corroded or the cotter pin has sheared off. In Boulder’s dry climate, thermal cycling from 5,400 feet of altitude accelerates this fatigue; we see it most in Mapleton Hill homes with original 1980s Copperfield throats.
• The plate is stuck open and won’t close fully. Creosote has built up on the frame rails, or the plate has warped from over-firing. A stuck-open damper bleeds heated air up the flue all winter and can pull combustion gases backward if your furnace or water heater shares the chimney.
• Rust flakes or metal shards fall into the firebox. The plate or frame is spalling, usually from moisture trapped behind the damper during Boulder’s spring freeze-thaw cycles. Once rust reaches this stage, repair isn’t practical; replacement is the only sound option.
• You feel cold air dropping even when the damper is “closed.” The plate has cracked or the frame has shifted, leaving a gap. A 1/8-inch gap around a 12-inch throat damper is equivalent to leaving a 4-inch hole in your wall.
• The cable-operated top-mount damper won’t open or close from the fireplace. The cable has frayed at the spring housing, or the spring tension has weakened. Copperfield top-mount springs are under significant load; a snapped cable can whip unpredictably.

You can safely check whether the handle moves freely and whether debris is visible on the plate. Do not attempt to remove a throat damper plate yourself. The assembly is heavy cast iron, often mortared into place, and positioned directly below the flue liner. Dropping it can crack tile or damage the smoke chamber. For top-mount dampers, the spring tension is genuinely hazardous; a released spring can cause serious hand or eye injury.
